Why CE Certification Matters for Battery Chargers
CE marking is mandatory for battery chargers sold in the European Economic Area (EEA). It indicates compliance with:
- Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2014/35/EU – Electrical safety
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 2014/30/EU – No interference
- RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU – No hazardous substances

How to Verify CE Certification (Step-by-Step)
Don't trust the CE mark on the product – it's easy to fake. Follow these steps to verify:
Step 1: Ask Supplier for CE Certificate
A valid CE certificate should include:
- Test lab name: TÜV SÜD, TÜV Rheinland, SGS, Intertek, etc. (notified bodies)
- Certificate number: Unique identifier (e.g., "TÜV-CE-2024-12345")
- Issue date: Should be recent (within 3-5 years)
- Product model: Matches the charger you're buying
- Standards listed: EN 60335-1, EN 60335-2-29, EN 55014-1/2, etc.
Step 2: Verify Certificate with Test Lab
Contact the test lab (TÜV, SGS, etc.) to confirm the certificate is valid. Most labs have online verification systems:
- TÜV SÜD: https://www.tuvsud.com/en/certification/verify-certificate
- TÜV Rheinland: https://www.tuv.com/gps/en/certipedia/index.jsp
- SGS: Contact local SGS office
Step 3: Check Technical File (If Possible)
Reputable suppliers will share (under NDA) the technical file, which includes:
- Test reports (full document, not just certificate)
- Risk assessment document
- Declaration of Conformity (DoC) – signed by manufacturer
Step 4: Watch for Red Flags
Fake CE certificates often have:
- Low-resolution scan (pixelated text/logos)
- Spelling errors
- Test lab name that doesn't exist
- Certificate number that doesn't verify online
- Issue date >5 years ago (CE certificates should be updated for new product versions)
CE Certification vs. Self-Declaration
For battery chargers, CE marking can be achieved via:
1. Self-Declaration (Allowed but Not Recommended)
- Manufacturer performs testing (or uses in-house lab)
- Manufacturer issues Declaration of Conformity
- Risk: No third-party verification – EU market surveillance may reject
- Recommendation: Only for very small quantities (<100 units/year)
2. Third-Party Certification (Recommended)
- Notified body (TÜV, SGS, Intertek) performs testing
- Test lab issues certificate
- Advantage: Widely accepted by retailers, distributors, and authorities
- Recommendation: MUST for chargers sold in EU market

FAQ: CE Certification for Battery Chargers
Is CE marking mandatory for chargers sold in UK after Brexit?
For most chargers, CE marking is still accepted in UK (England, Scotland, Wales) until December 2027. After that, UKCA marking will be mandatory. For Northern Ireland, CE marking remains mandatory (EU rule).
Recommendation: Get both CE and UKCA certifications if you sell in both EU and UK.
How much does CE certification cost for a battery charger?
CE certification (third-party lab) costs:
- Simple charger (36V 2A): €3,000-€5,000
- Complex charger (48V 5A, IP67): €5,000-€8,000
- Additional models: €1,000-€3,000 each (if similar design)
Self-declaration costs €0-€2,000 (if you do testing in-house), but is NOT recommended for market acceptance.
