48V Lithium Battery Charger Guide

Everything about 48V lithium battery chargers: absorption voltage, current sizing, connectors and where 48V packs are used.

A 48V lithium battery charger charges a 48V nominal pack — most commonly 16-series LiFePO4 (15.2V nominal per 4S block, 58.4V absorption) or 13-series Li-ion (54.6V absorption). Picking the right profile protects the pack and maximizes cycle life.

48V LiFePO4 vs 48V Li-ion

The single most common mistake is assuming "48V" is one number. A 48V LiFePO4 charger tops at ~58.4V; a 48V Li-ion (13S) charger tops at ~54.6V. Mixing them damages cells.

Where 48V is used

Sizing current

For a 100Ah 48V LiFePO4 pack, 0.2C = 20A, 0.5C = 50A. Faster is possible with thermal headroom. Confirm your BMS continuous charge limit before specifying.

FAQ

Is 48V LiFePO4 the same as 48V Li-ion?

No. They share the "48V" label but use different absorption voltages (58.4V vs 54.6V). Always match the charger to the cell chemistry.

Can I use a 48V charger for a 51.2V pack?

A 51.2V pack is a 16S LiFePO4 pack; its charger absorption is 58.4V, identical to a "48V LiFePO4" charger. The labels differ but the electrical target is the same.

What connector is standard for 48V?

There is no single standard; XLR, M16/GX16, Anderson and proprietary carts connectors are all common. Match the connector to your pack or request a custom one.

How fast can I charge a 48V pack?

0.2C–0.5C is standard and safe. A 100Ah pack charges in ~2–5 hours at 20–50A, depending on thermal design and BMS limits.
