LiFePO4 batteries need a dedicated charger with the correct charging profile. Here's why and how to choose.
LiFePO4 Charging Characteristics
- Nominal voltage: 3.2V per cell
- Full charge voltage: 3.65V per cell
- Charging mode: CC/CV (Constant Current / Constant Voltage)
- Recommended current: 0.3C-0.5C
Voltage Reference
| Battery (Nominal) | Cells | Charger V |
|---|---|---|
| 12V LiFePO4 | 4S | 14.6V |
| 24V LiFePO4 | 8S | 29.2V |
| 48V LiFePO4 | 16S | 58.4V |
Why Not Use a Li-ion Charger?
Li-ion chargers charge to 4.2V/cell, but LiFePO4 max is 3.65V/cell. Overcharging LiFePO4 can cause damage. The BMS should cut off, but it's not safe to rely on.
BMS Requirements
- Over-voltage protection per cell
- Balancing function
- Temperature monitoring
- Charge enable/disable control
