42V and 54.6V chargers look similar but serve completely different battery systems. Using the wrong one can damage your battery.
42V Charger
- For: 36V lithium-ion battery (10S)
- Full charge voltage: 42V (10 x 4.2V)
- Common e-bikes: Bosch Active Line, Yamaha PW, standard 36V e-bikes
- Typical current: 2A (standard) or 4A (fast charge)
54.6V Charger
- For: 48V lithium-ion battery (13S)
- Full charge voltage: 54.6V (13 x 4.2V)
- Common e-bikes: High-power e-bikes, e-scooters, Segway
- Typical current: 2A, 5A, or 8A
Why They're Not Interchangeable
Using a 42V charger on a 48V battery: the charger voltage is lower than the battery voltage, so charging won't start or will be incomplete.
Using a 54.6V charger on a 36V battery: the charger will overcharge the battery, causing damage, swelling, or fire risk. The BMS should cut off, but it's not safe to rely on that.
How to Identify Which One You Need
Check the label on your original charger or battery:
- If it says "36V" → you need a 42V charger
- If it says "48V" → you need a 54.6V charger
- If it says "output: 42V" → it's a 36V system charger
- If it says "output: 54.6V" → it's a 48V system charger
