Li-ion vs LiFePO4 Battery Charger: Which One Do You Need?

Understanding the charging voltage differences between Li-ion and LiFePO4 batteries, and why using the wrong charger type damages your battery.

Li-ion vs LiFePO4 Battery Charger: Which One Do You Need?

Li-ion and LiFePO4 batteries require different charging profiles. Using the wrong charger can reduce battery life or cause safety issues.

Cell Voltage Differences

ChemistryNominal/CellFull Charge/Cell12V Pack Charge V48V Pack Charge V
Li-ion (NMC)3.6V4.2V12.6V54.6V
LiFePO43.2V3.65V14.6V56.0V

Why You Can’t Mix Them

A Li-ion charger set to 4.2V/cell will overcharge a LiFePO4 battery (max 3.65V/cell). Conversely, a LiFePO4 charger at 3.65V/cell won’t fully charge a Li-ion battery.

How to Identify Your Battery Type

  • Check the battery label for “Li-ion” or “LiFePO4” or “LFP”
  • LiFePO4 packs often have a BMS with balance leads for each cell
  • If nominal voltage is 3.2V/cell, it’s LiFePO4
  • If nominal voltage is 3.6V/cell, it’s standard Li-ion

Our Chargers Support Both

Juxon chargers can be configured for either Li-ion or LiFePO4 charging profiles. Just confirm your battery chemistry when ordering. Contact us to configure the right charger.
