AGV & AMR — charging strategies for 24/7 operations

Opportunity charging, docking safety and how to size a charger for autonomous fleets.

Autonomous fleets don’t wait for a shift change to charge. They top up in gaps. That changes how you size the charger.

Opportunity charging changes the math

If a robot grabs 8 minutes at every dock, you don’t need a full overnight charge — you need enough current to replace what one run consumes, fast. Sizing becomes energy-per-cycle ÷ dock time, not pack capacity ÷ 8 hours.

Docking safety is a charger problem

The mating happens unattended, so the charger must handshake before it delivers: detect reverse polarity, confirm seating, then ramp. A dumb supply that energizes on contact is a spark waiting to happen.

Thermal headroom

High-rate opportunity charging heats cells. Size the charger’s CV taper and add temperature sensing so the pack stays in its safe window across a 24/7 duty cycle.
